CNN's Jim Sciutto describes first moments of a recent strike over Tel Aviv.

The Israeli military said on October 1, 2024, that Iran fired missiles and it ordered residents to remain close to bomb shelters as air raid sirens sounded across the country.

Israel and the United States have warned there would be severe consequences in the event of an attack on Israel from Iran, which backs the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The orders to shelter in place were sent to Israelis' mobile phones and announced on national television.

Israeli army spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said the country's air defense system was fully operational, detecting and intercepting threats. “However, the defense is not hermetic,” he said.

Iranian media began posting videos that appeared to show missile launches at several sites across the country. However, the Iranian government did not immediately acknowledge what was happening.

The air raid alerts in Israel came after a day of rocket and missile attacks from Lebanon, where Israel said it had begun limited ground operations against Hezbollah.

Israeli airstrikes and artillery fire pounded southern Lebanese villages where people were ordered to evacuate, and Hezbollah militants responded by firing a barrage of rockets into Israel. There was no immediate word on casualties as fighting intensified and concerns of a wider regional war grew.

Iran launched dozens of missiles toward Israel on Tuesday in what it said was a response to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and others. ISRAEL has invaded Lebanon after weeks of a brutal airstrike campaign as it seeks to cripple terror group Hezbollah.

Troops and tanks have stormed across the border hours after Israel revealed special forces had already attacked defence tunnels inside the country.

In a statement just before midnight Monday UK time, the IDF said its troops were backed by artillery and the air force.

It dubbed the brave gambit against Iran’s proxy army, which has rained missiles on Jewish homes for nearly a year, Operation Northern Arrows.

The force described the invasion as "limited" and "localised" ground raids against Hezbollah terrorist targets in southern Lebanon that pose a threat to Israel.

The IDF revealed planning has been going on for months and was only launched after approval by political leaders.

Israel Lebanon Conflict LIVE Update: Israel Bombs Central Beirut, Killing At Least Nine People

Israel bombed central Beirut in the early hours of Thursday, killing at least nine people, after its forces suffered their deadliest day on the Lebanese front in a year of clashes against Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah. Israel said it conducted a precise air strike on Beirut. Reuters witnesses reported hearing a massive blast, and a security source said it targeted a building in central Beirut's Bachoura neighbourhood close to parliament, the nearest Israeli strikes have come to Lebanon's seat of government. At least six people were killed and seven wounded, Lebanese health officials said. A photo being circulated on Lebanese WhatsApp groups, which Reuters could not immediately verify, showed a heavily damaged building with its first floor on fire. Three missiles also hit the southern suburb of Dahiyeh, where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed last week, and loud explosions were heard, Lebanese security officials said. The southern suburbs came under more than a dozen Israeli strikes on Wednesday.
